The fire in Dr. King’s bungalow

March 3, 1991

On Sunday, March 3rd, 1991, Dr. King was scheduled to give an address, but he didn’t feel well and stayed back to receive some healing in his bedroom. It was during the healing that a fire was noticed. The front room was engulfed in flames. There was black smoke everywhere and severe heat. Dr. King was helped to escape through a window in his bedroom to safety.

The fire was extinguished quickly by staff members, before the fire department, delayed by an annual marathon race nearby, was able to reach the bungalow. The fire caused severe damage to Dr. King’s living room, office, and the Transmission Room, as well as smoke damage to much of the bungalow.
