Dr. King made short trips around the country of his birth, with one or more overnight stops along the way, which he enjoyed very much, but there always had to be a purpose behind it. They could be anything from searching for a new missions vessel by visiting boatyards or attending a boat show, or for other things.

Dr. John Holder, who acted as his personal assistant and driver in the UK during that period, recalled the pleasure these trips brought to him: “He loved those trips around the UK, mainly with Richard Lawrence and myself. He had a great time. It was fantastic – he was quite easy to be with….

“He liked to leave early, often at 7 am. We would stop at a service station or rest stop on the way, and he used to have a packed lunch of sandwiches, pork pies and things like that. He would always have tea. He wasn’t always a fan of luxury hotels, and could be quite happy with an average hotel.”
