1) and 2) Dr. King first attended Guisborough Grammar School at the age of 11, and stayed for approximately four years. As a part of his mystical pilgrimage, he visited his old school in Guisborough again on Saturday, June 17th, 1978. It was a place that he described as being very significant in his childhood.
Dr. King: “I visited the grammar school this morning and was surprised at the alterations; it is now a college with numerous buildings…littering up the beautiful playing fields on which we used to play cricket, rugby, football (soccer), etc.”
It is important to note that the lessons he learned on those playing fields had a very important impact on Dr. King, and the future success of missions of world importance.
3) and 4) The school was built in the late 1500s and was rebuilt again in the late 1800s. It backed onto the famous Guisborough Abbey, which was destroyed. The church part of the abbey was rebuilt again. As a boy, Dr. King used to go there (Saint Nicholas Church) taking great pleasure in ringing the church bells, especially at Christmas time and other festive occasions.
